Set Up A Donor Advised Fund
Here’s a great place to start: The National Philanthropic Trust
1) Non-Cash Gifts
You can give non-cash gifts such as real estate, stocks and crypto to Kings Ransom through a Donor Advised Fund.
Your benefit is to avoid selling assets and incurring tax and you would receive a full deduction for the gift as long as you owned the asset for at least one year.
2) Large One-Time Donations
Many donors do not receive a deduction for their charitable giving because the giving does not exceed their standard deduction. Assume you give $500 per month, for a total of $6000 per year and that you have a mortgage and pay $1500 per month in interest. At the end of the year, you would have a potential deduction of $6000 (donation) and $18,000 (mortgage interest) for a total of $24,000. In 2023, the standard deduction for a married couple was $27,700 and you would receive no tax benefits.
With that same scenario, you open a donor-advised fund and donate $24,000 one-time to fund four years of giving. You instruct the fund to make monthly $500 grants to King’s Ransom. You would receive a charitable deduction of $24,000. In addition, your donation would earn interest and over time, the donation to King’s Ransom could be increased.
Employer Matching
Many employers will match their employees’ charitable donations. You should be able to speak with a supervisor, human resources or the accounting department at your place of employment to learn about how this process operates with your employer.
