What IS A “Servant’s Heart”?

What IS A “Servant’s Heart”?

Frequently – sometimes too often – we’re asked to “step-up”… “serve”… “give of yourself.” And, we’re probably AMONG them! But today, I’m stepping a bit outside of my “writer” role and speaking from a “personal” place. As mentioned last week, I’m actually FROM the Gulf Coast and have LIVED through disasters, so it IS personal for me!

However, we’re taking a more “global” viewpoint this week. And, surprisingly, that’s where it gets “personal” for ME! Let me explain. As a part of my career in communications, I’ve been exposed to a wide spectrum of organizations, business models, marketing strategies, trends and cultures. It’s a blessing, really.

So, years ago I saw something from a corporation… and it honestly resonated with me and became a part of my mindset. It was the phrase “servant’s heart.” Two simple little words – QUITE powerful on their own – but, together? WOW!

This idea tumbled around in my mind. I prayed about it. Of course, I went to the Bible. And, honestly, at first I just could NOT wrap my head around the concept of “servitude.” C’mon, we’re Americans. We fought wars to eliminate a life of servitude – both here and around the world.

Say WHAT?!?

Yet, I was told I should willingly step into the life of a servant!? As always, God provided some much-needed guidance: “Remember these things, O Jacob, And Israel, for you are My servant; I have formed you, you are My servant, O Israel, you will not be forgotten by Me. I have wiped out your transgressions like a thick cloud And your sins like a heavy mist. Return to Me, for I have redeemed you.” (Isaiah 44:21-22)

Sounds like an amazing deal for me… RIGHT?! He works miracles and we, as His servants, reap the benefits. When He sets a divine plan in motion, nothing is beyond reach! “This was a small thing in Your eyes, O God; but You have spoken of Your servant’s house for a great while to come, and have regarded me according to the standard of a man of high degree, O Lord God.  What more can David still say to You concerning the honor bestowed on Your servant? For You know Your servant. O Lord, for Your servant’s sake, and according to Your own heart, You have wrought all this greatness, to make known all these great things.” (I Chronicles 17:17-19)

That “AH-HA!” Moment

Once He gave me the grace to finally understand HIS “definition” of servant differed substantially from MINE, I “got it!” I’m not a traditional “servant” – I’m His instrument and messenger, equipped and tasked to fulfill His mission and vision during my lifetime on this earth.

So when Hurricane Harvey hit, it certainly touched my heart personally, because these areas represented decades of my life and countless memories. But, it’s not JUST the geography! It’s His people. It’s His mission to deliver them. And embracing the idea of a “servant’s heart” means it’s now MY mission!

However, as wildfires rage throughout the western United States, South Asia faces total flood devastation, Hurricane Irma lays waste to the Caribbean and sets her course for the mainland, it’s ALL personal for me! It’s clear my servant’s heart will be kept quite busy… as will our entire TEAM of servants, here at King’s Ransom Foundation. Regardless of where disaster strikes, God is there – along with His legion of “servants!”

A particular incident, a specific location, a “special” group, do not govern a servant’s heart! Everyone, everywhere, in every circumstance, share in God’s grace and mercy. It’s universal! His LOVE is universal! A servant’s heart knows NO boundaries. It doesn’t see color, language, age, religion. It just lives to serve HIM. And sometimes, my “servant’s heart” falls WAAAAY short… but with His overriding vision and mission guiding me, I still maintain my course – shortcomings and all. Let’s face it, a group of His servants, fostering a servant’s heart, can accomplish miracles! Join us… your servant’s heart is welcome in our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube communities!
